Biography

Sophie Burns is a mezzo-soprano from Melbourne, Australia. After making her Italian debut at the age of 20 singing Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Sophie has since continued her career performing across Europe and Australia in a wide range of operas, concerts, and competitions.

 

In 2021 Sophie is delighted to make her role debut of Dorabella in Opera Studio Puglia's production of Così fan tutte at Teatro Garibaldi in Lucera, Italy. She will also make her debut of Maddalena in Verdi's Rigoletto as part of the Opera Studio Molise, performing under the baton of Stefano Teani at Campobasso's Teatro Savoioa. Other recent highlights include singing Giovanna in Verdi's Rigoletto, returning once again to the prestigious stage of Opera de Tenerife with the production directed by Mario Pontiggia and conducted by Giuseppe Finzi.

 

In 2018, Sophie was accepted into Opera de Tenerife’s Opera (e)Studio, which allowed her to make her professional Spanish debut singing the role of Zulma in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri. This also allowed her the honour of working closely with Artistic Director Giulio Zappa and performing for the world-class soprano Mariella Devia in masterclass. This young artist program also made it possible for Sophie to make her debut at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, reprising the role of Zulma under the baton of Maestro Nikolas Nägele.   

 

Other notable performances include two productions of Puccini’s Suor Angelica singing La Badessa and La Maestra delle Novizie. First, under the baton of Robert Popasci at the Theatersaal Längenfeldgasse in Vienna, Austria and second directed by Berlin-born Axel Kresin at Villa Elisabeth Berlin, Germany.

 

During her career as a young singer, Sophie has been the recipient of many awards and honors. Most notably, Sophie received the Hugh Rogers Scholarship of the Acclaim Italian Opera Fellowship which in turn saw her performing the roles of Ferdinando (Il Flaminio) and Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro) in the Pergolesi Spontini Music Festival held at the Teatro Moriconi in Jesi, Italy. , Sophie was also fortunate to perform scenes from Le Nozze di Figaro for the Concerto di Lirica held at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala. 

 

Sophie has taken part in masterclasses lead by some of the industry’s greatest, including Daniela Barcellona with GV Management, Mariella Devia at Opera de Tenerife, Luciana Serra and Maestro Vincenzo Scalera at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala and Giulio Zappa, also at Opera de Tenerife.

 

Alumna of two of the top musical institutions in Melbourne, Sophie obtained in 2013 a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Music (Honors) from both Monash University Conservatorium and the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. 

 

A keen linguist, Sophie has also spent many years honing her Italian, French and German; all of which she is able to speak to a high degree. 

 

Sophie is currently based in Berlin, Germany.
